Probably the most asked question I receive is about my thoughts on buying older digital cameras at on-line auctions such as eBay. The question is generally in regards to models that are a couple of years old or older and the concern is, are these inexpensive cameras likely to offer good value for the investment.
While researching inexpensive digital cameras on eBay I concentrated on cameras available for less that $300 for the upper end digital cameras.
Some digital cameras that were selling included a Canon PowerShot A560 that was sold for $126.50 plus $10 shipping. There were also a couple of other Canon digital cameras which had bids for under $35. The problem was, these cameras didn't meet the reserve bid price and therefore weren't sold. In addition I found a Canon PowerShot SD600 selling for $125 + $9 shipping.
So would an inexpensive digital camera be considered a wise investment? That would depend entirely on the condition of the individual camera, but I would consider spending $165 for a Nikon Coolpix 5700 Digital Camera a good price for an excellent digital camera. At that price it certainly allows people the opportunity to purchase a very good digital camera they may not be able to work into their budget otherwise.
Also sold was a Nikon D-50 SLR Digital Camera for $225 with free shipping. The Nikon D-50 SLR Digital Camera is an advanced camera, so I would have to say it was a good deal.
Another camera located was the Nikon Coolpix 4300 4.0 Mega pixel for just $60 + $10 shipping. If you are truly in the market for a digital camera I’m not sure you will be able to find anything cheaper than that!
One camera I 'm not quite convinced about is the Olympus C-765. My personal opinion is that some of the current super zoom cameras offer a better value however at a slightly higher price tag. So you do need to be cautious about what you buy.
What should you take into consideration when purchasing a used camera?
This may sound a little odd, but I don’t think there have been any great
advances in picture quality over the past couple of years. This statement is
in regards to the standard family photo snap shot taken in decent lighting
conditions & not the more expensive models available today.
Some areas where digital cameras have improved are additional mega pixels, improved zoom, quicker shutter response times, lower battery consumption, larger LCD viewing screens, and most digital camera manufacturers have reduced the body size making those long days toting a camera around a lot more fun.
In addition you should find improved movie quality with sound, better lowlight photography in some conditions, plus reduced macro focusing distances. With these improvements, you should carefully weigh these factors when considering purchasing an older used digital camera.
When purchasing an older camera it isn't always easy to tell exactly much use the camera has received. Digital cameras are fairly delicate and there is always a certain risk when purchasing any camera out of warranty.
In short, there are bargains to be had on inexpensive digital cameras, especially for those who are looking for cameras available for prices lower than the least expensive current models. You do need to consider all the factors that are most important to you personally before purchasing any camera whether new or used.
